Also below is the assessment tool titled "6 Traits Feedback On Your Writing" that students and I use to assess their work (thanks to Steve Peha for making such a simple and effective tool).
In addition, I have added an example of the spreadsheet I keep to record student's progress by using the results from this used either self, peer or teacher assessment.
By using the same colour codes from the 6+1 Traits display, I can see on the spreadsheet who I need to conference with and provide specific assistance. I target those students scoring below 3.5 out of 5 but take into account what stage of the Writing Process they are up to when we assess. I find that conferencing by trait groups is not only time efficient but, more importantly, a powerful opportunity for peer teaching and an avenue for sharing ideas. The spreadsheet also tells me overall as a whole class which traits are strong and which need attention.
ProDivas is a simple sharing approach, teacher to teacher, for our professional development. We collect and share bite-sized practical ideas. Once you take a bite, you may be self-motivated to eat the whole meal! We aim to find ideas supported by research to then apply for “best practice” but some ideas are too good to miss and are just simple “teacher tips”.
