It all started when we were introducing the concept of square metres to study Area. We figured out that our carpet was 12 metres square by measuring out square metres on our carpet. Natasha liked the idea so much so she did her whole classroom...which I thought was pure one-upmanship...but I digress. Of course, I had to do mine too! This could not stand.
That's when things go ugly. Real ugly. Some of Natasha's students marched into my room and threw down the gauntlet for a game of Battleship. Year 4F vs. Year4H. Jeers and chants ensued, it was on.
Her class laid out their ships, as mine did the same. Once the game plan was sorted, we launched missiles at each other! Well..not exactly. We did utilise our interactive whiteboards and video chatted our coordinates to each other. The video chat format also allowed for making faces at each other. Natasha had a pirate hat...I didn't. For the record, I am still bitter about that.
We put the above game board up on our IWB to keep track of our hits and misses. You can download it below.
In the end, Natasha's class won. It was a tight game....I still maintain some cheating may have taken place. However, I have no proof so I must be content with a rematch. She still has yet to get back to me on when that rematch will be...which I think is telling.
The tape is still on our floors and not only for a possible rematch. This has been very useful for mapping, coordinates, perimeter, area and other forms of measurement so far. Looking to the future, I think this could also be helpful in fractions. The tape is a bit tattered now, and my pride is still bruised....but I would do it again!
ProDivas is a simple sharing approach, teacher to teacher, for our professional development. We collect and share bite-sized practical ideas. Once you take a bite, you may be self-motivated to eat the whole meal! We aim to find ideas supported by research to then apply for “best practice” but some ideas are too good to miss and are just simple “teacher tips”.
