Stage 1 Pre-Writing
Ideas Ideas Ideas - it is all about IDEAS!
We use the Ideas Development Writing Trait at this stage. I use the strategy of Quick Lists to help me think of ideas to write. The best writing comes from my experiences or my strong feelings. I found something that had both. The rest I can use next time I am stuck for a good idea.
Stage 2 Drafting
We focus on 3 of the 6 Writing Traits here: Voice, Organization and Word Choice.
To help with Organization you can use the strategy called IDEA-DETAILS. You take one simple idea and write as many details about it as you can. You do this on a graphic organizer called a T Chart (like my sample on the right). Think any details that you can such as;
Then begin writing. Don't talk or stop. Just let yourself remember being in that experience or feeling and write write write! It is ok if you don't use all of your notes but if you get stuck go back and use a few more of your notes. You will think of new details while your writing so use them in your Draft if you can too.
Stage 3 Sharing
This a time for you to share your work with a partner.
Ask your sharing partner to use this 6 Traits Feedback sheet to help you get specific information about what is good and what needs improving in your writing.
When you are filling out the sheet for your sharing partner, remember to add useful tips to help the writer improve.
Don't just write, "Keep trying."
Instead write details of how the author can improve such as, "This makes me think but it feels like it still needs an ending."
Stage 4 Revising
Revising helps make your writing even better! So take it seriously by doing a thorough job (time and effort).
Focus on Sentence Fluency, Word Choice and Voice.
Revise in BLUE pencil.
